In SEO there are basically 12 things that you need to keep in mind when you are optimizing your website or blog for the search engines. I am going to only cover 5 of them and the rest you can check out in our online SEO class that walks you through each step one by one..

1. Optimize Your Blog Title

The first thing you want to do when optimizing your blog for the search engines is to put your targeted keyword in your blog title. Now if you are not familiar with what a keyword is, then I encourage you to read my blog on how to do proper keyword research and then come back and finish this blog.

If you do not do proper keyword research, then all the tips that I will share with you will be of no value.

Ok, once you have decided on what your keyword will be and what keyword you will optimize your blog for, you need to put that keyword in your blog title.

When you first set out to write a blog word press will ask you the blog title. You want to put the exact keyword in the blog title that you are trying to rank for.

In the example below I am optimizing this blog for the keyword "How To Use SEO For Your Website."

2. Optimize Your Meta Title

The next thing you want to do after you have optimized your blog title with your targeted keyword is to optimize your Meta Title with your targeted keywords. Now when you optimize your Meta Title, you want to put your keyword as close to the beginning as possible.

The cool thing about Meta Titles is google gives you 60 characters to optimize your Meta Title with.

Not only do you want to put your keyword in your Meta Title, but you also want to put some words that will attract people to click on your listing

Let me explain.

When google returns searches for keywords entered in their search engine, they display the Meta Title and the Meta Description.

For example, I will type into google " How To Use SEO For Your Website"

The Meta Title is what you see at the top:

The Meta Description which we will cover in the next tip is right under that:

The Meta Title gets the reader's attention. That is why you want to put words after your keyword that will cause people to click.

Say my target keyword is once again " How To SEO For Your Website " that is only 31 characters, so I still have 29 characters left. Now I can add something like [Simple But Effective Tips] after the keyword that would make the reader want to click on the listing or at least read my Meta Description.

3. Optimize Your Meta Description

After optimizing your Meta Title you then want to optimize your Meta Description. The exciting thing about Meta Descriptions is you get 160 characters to get your message across.

Once again you want to put your target keyword as close to the beginning as possible. So let's say we are optimizing once again for the keyword " How To Use SEO For Your Website ."

My Meta Description could look something like this:

In This Blog I Will Show You How To Use SEO For Your Website. Learn How To Get More Traffic And Boost The Sales Of Your Search Engine Optimization Course.

You want your keyword to be in the Meta Description and you also want to include content that will make the reader want to click on your listing.

Tip: The more clicks you get on your listing, the more google will give you impressions in the search engine. If a reader clicks on your listing is to google like a thumbs up on Facebook. Google likes that.

Now if your listing is showing up, but you are not getting any clicks, then eventually google will lower your listing amongst the other listing.

There is a way to find out how many impressions your keyword is getting and also how many clicks, but I will not cover that in this blog. You can learn how to do that in " How To Optimize Your Content For SEO " video on YouTube or you can enroll in our online SEO course.

4. Keyword In First Two Sentences

After optimizing your Blog Title, Meta Title and Meta Description, you then want to add your targeted keyword within the first 2 or 3 sentences of your content.

So if I am writing a blog about How To Get More Traffic To Your Website and that is my targeted keyword, then I want to make sure I put the targeted keyword within the first 2 or 3 sentences of my blog content.

Example:

Hello everyone, thank you for taking the time to read my blog. Today I will cover the topic " How To Get More Traffic To Your Website' (keyword) I hope you enjoy and let me know if you have questions as you read the content.

As you can see, I put the targeted keyword in the first 2 or 3 sentences, but you also want to make sure it flows naturally.  You don't just want to drop your keyword in your content, and it makes little sense to the reader.

The mistake many people make is they write their content for search engines rather than writing for the reader. You want to write your content for the reader and make sure they have an enjoyable user experience, because the longer someone stays on your blog page the better google likes your content. Once again that is another thumbs up from google.

5. Keyword In Your Image Alt Tag

Now there are 12 tips, but I will only cover 5. If you want to get access to all 12 tips then I encourage you to enroll in our SEO course. We cover each step and we even have some bonus material that will have you looking like an SEO expert in a brief time.

Last tip but definitely not least is you want to put your targeted keyword in your image alt title.

You want to always add an image to your blog and when you do you want to put your keyword in the image alt tag of your image.

Example:

seo-image-alt-text

Once you add an image to your blog word press will give you the option on the far right side of the page to add an image alt text. You want to enter your target keyword in the image alt text box and you are good to go.
