  • Proper Keyword Research ( This is one of the most important thing to do )
  • Keyword in Post Title
  • Keyword in Meta Title
  • Keyword In Meta Description
  • One Internal Link
  • One External Link ( To an authority website )

Proper Keyword Research

This is one of the most important steps of Search Engine Optimization. If this is not done or done right then everything you do after this really doesn't matter. So it is very important to make sure that you do proper keyword research.

The secret in finding the right keyword is to look for high search volume and low competition. You want to find keywords that you can realistically rank for. It is also called "Low Hanging Fruit."

If you are not familiar with keyword research and how to go about doing it proper you can watch our tutorial video here.

It all starts with proper keyword research...

Keyword in Post Title

You want to make sure that the keyword you are trying to rank for is in the blog post title of your blog. You want it to be exactly as the wording that you are trying to rank for.

Example: If I am trying to rank for the keyword " Google SEO Checklist " then when it put this keyword in my blog title I can put " Google SEO Checklist - What are the secrets ". You don't want to put " Google Checklist for SEO and the secrets " as you can see it is not the same working as the keyword that I am trying to rank for.

It needs to be the exact same wording.

Keyword in Meta Title

You also want to put the keyword that you are trying to rank for in your Meta Title. Now you may be asking what is the difference between a Blog Title and a Meta Title.

Here are some images that will show you the difference:

The Blog Title is the title of your Blog and this is where you name the title of your blog:

Blog-title

The Meta Title is what shows up in the search engines. Depending on what plugin you have for SEO it may look a little different than mines, but they are all pretty much labeled as Meta Title or Title.

I am using the SEO Press plugin and it looks like this:

Meta-Title

As you an see I used the Meta Title of this blog as an example. This Blogs Meta Title is " Google SEO Checklist - Secrets to having the right SEO List. "

Keep in mind that your Meta Title is limited to only 60 characters, so use your space wisely.

Here is a secret for your Meta Title: You Want To Camel Case Your Meta Title.

That is when you capitalize the first letter of each word.

Example: Google SEO CheckList - Secrets To Having The Right SEO List. ( You can't use bold letters in your actual Meta Title, but I am just bolding them to show you what letters are actually capitalized. )

This helps you to stand out from all the other listings that will show up in google helping you to get more attention, more clicks and more visitors to your site.

Here is how your Meta Title will look in the google search engines:

Keyword in Meta Description

This is basically an abstract of what your post is going to be about. It is important to make sure you take the time to write out a Meta Description for your blog as this is what will show up in the search engines.

Here is where you would put the information of your Meta Description:

meta-description

Like I said earlier I am using the SEO Press plugin and that is how it looks on my plugin, but they are all pretty much labeled the same:

Also, just like you Camel Cased your Meta Title you also want to make sure you Camel Case your Meta Description.

When writing out your Meta Description you want to try and put your keyword as close to the beginning of your Meta Description as possible. Also, remember that your Meta Description is limited to 160 characters so you want to make sure that you use the space wisely.

Here is how your Meta Description will look in the google search engines:

One Internal Link Within Your Post

What we mean by an internal link within your post is when you put a link in the blog post that you are working on that links to another blog post that you have already published.

Example: I have a blog post that I published already and it is called SEO Marketing For Beginners. So what I could do is put a link in this blog using one of the words in this blog that I am writing now that connects to the blog that is already published.

So if I have a sentence that reads, " SEO Marketing is very important once you have finished off your SEO Checklist. " I can then put a link from in the words SEO Marketing to a previous blog that covers that topic.

That is what you call an internal link.

A lot of people leave this technique out, but this should be a part of your SEO checklist, as this helps google to be able to index your site. Without an internal link the only way that google can index your site is by your Menu and your sitemap, so this provides another way for google to know what's going on on your site.

Note: Try to avoid words like click here, click here now, or go here and try and make it sound natural.

One External Link To Authority Source

This is when you put a link in the blog post that you are writing to an external source that has a high authority website.

Example: Say I use the word Search Engine Marketing in my blog post, I can go to wikipedia and find a page that talks about this topic and link to it from within by blog.

This is a very powerful technique and should be done when you are working on writing a new blog post.

This tells google that you are not being selfish and you don't mind linking to other sites that can help you user understand he topic better.

Note: You can always find good topics on Wikipedia and it is ok to use it for all of your post.

Alt Tags Within Your Images

This is when you put your keyword or related keyword within the alt tag of pictures on your website.

You want to put alt tags on every single image in your post.

Example: If the keyword for my blog is " Google SEO Checklist " and I have 3 or 4 images that need alt tags. I can find related keywords to my main keyword and put them as the alt tag of the other images.

This is when you put your keyword or related keyword within the alt tag of pictures on your website.

You want to put alt tags on every single image in your post.
